Deanol, also known as DMAE, is a popular active ingredient in skin creams. It’s applied to the skin for reducing the signs of aging. Before using any anti-aging skin care product or topical cream it is always best to check the ingredients for your own peace of mind.

This compound can also be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and on age or liver spots. It’s also used in non-topical applications, and some have even claimed it extends life span.

Have There Been Any Studies Of Deanol?

Deanol (DMAE) is short for dimethylaminoethanol, a natural substance that facilitates the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This is one of the first substances proven in studies to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve sagging skin.

Here are two government studies. The first one concludes the DMAE formulation under investigation increased skin firmness. Read it here.

The second study noted a documented increase in skin firmness with possible improvement in underlying facial muscle tone. Read it here.

Other similar topical application studies can be found online. Their results are why products containing it are a ‘facelift in a jar.’

Other Clinical Studies Of Deanol

There are different studies over a wide range of effects besides its anti-aging properties. It’s better known and researched as a chemical to improve brain function than a skin tightening product. In studies, it reduced the decline in cognitive ability and memory due to aging.

In fact, Riker Laboratories sold it as the prescription drug Deaner. Prescribed for the management of children with behavior problems and learning difficulties. It may also stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of cell membranes.

Is Deanol Safe To Use?

It’s used as a topical treatment or a supplement. Both types of applications are safe to use. Using it topically there are no reported serious side effects. It has been used in skin care products for years without widespread reports of skin damage or other problems.

It’s a safe supplement when consumed in amounts as recommended by health professionals. Internal use is not recommended for patients with bipolar depression, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, or seizure disorders.

It’s not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing. There have not been enough studies on it. Only use it when approved by a medical doctor.

The Benefits Of Using Deanol In Topical Applications

One of the major benefits is it helps to maintain muscle tone and to firm and tighten the skin which prevents sagging and drooping reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The visible effects of it are apparent by the reduction of the appearance of wrinkles. This is similar to the way Botox works.

The effects of cumulative use can last long term. They not only include the physical aesthetic but mental and psychological/emotional health benefits as well.

DMAE skin care products are becoming more and more popular in the anti-aging market. They can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in people and reverse facial sag.  Firming up your skin is an important part of anti-aging skin care along with eliminating wrinkles.
